I had forgotten to post this live set, which I did in December in Madrid for the cocktail reception at the Complex Networks 2021 conference. It goes from Deodato's Jazzy/Groovy take on Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra to techno (the set went on to a few more techno tracks ommitted here), but strongly grounded on Disco/Funk/EuroDisco. So here is another DJ set: a voyage from Dub to DrumNBass, Techno and House. I have listening to a lot of Reggae and Dub since watching Steve MeQueen's Lover's Rock. During the last Riot Bootique parties in Bloomington I have been playing with new gear and mixing 4 tracks at the same time (including ripping off Purple Disco Machine a little). Here are parts of sets from April and May with some of those experiments, errors and all. Overall a feel good set emphasizing the diversity of self that makes us all up. At the last Riot Bootique in Bloomington I decided to do a 30 Year Challenge, playing one set (the second of the night) with new stuff, and another set (a late night set) with tracks from 1989 in honor of the Summer of Love. My time in the UK around that time was very formative in my taste for dance music and many other things. 30 years later I am still at it and loving it! As Janelle Monáe says in the opening track, "A little crazy, little sexy, little cool, Little rough around the edges, but I keep it smooth, I'm always left of center and that's right where I belong, I'm the random minor note you hear in major songs. And I like that. I don't really give a fuck if I was just the only one (I am not). I never like to follow, follow all around, the chase is on." 30 years later I still Like that. For the latest Riot Bootique in Bloomington I decided to do a homage to Aretha Franklin, the absolute Queen of Soul. The idea was to make it super open, spanning many genres and all about Unity---which we need more than ever. We have been doing the Riot Bootique in Bloomington again since the Summer, including a transcontinental edition. They have been wonderful parties full of love with great people---the best antidote to the current political realities. The two sets from last Friday are here in the Funky Dancefloor on Fire---well, the first set plus a lot of the second set. I wanted it funky (given Bootsy Collins' recent visit to Bloomington), and it is. But it covers all the Riot Bootique bases: from Disco to House and Techno via Funk. The Riot Bootique returned to Bloomington after more than a year away. It was a wonderful Party full of love with people who came to celebrate with us the reunion. I wanted to celebrate what is best about Bloomington and the US and deride what divides us. The last Bootique was our last riot before our European hiatus. It was a wonderful Party full of love with people who came to celebrate with us the last few years of the Riot, as well as people who came for the first time. I wanted to celebrate Prince and deliver a Party, and that's what we got. PartyUp is essentially my first set, (second of the night after DJ Angst), which ends with Prince's 1999. But since the Bootique kept the Riot up beyond closing time with amazing people, I also added the last few tracks of the night that I played at 3AM. I went for a Pop Lift for the first set at the last Riot Bootique. Taking things to where melody, groove and vocals meet to lift our spirits up---not forgetting a good bang at the end. Since this was the first set of a night that started slow, it starts mellow but it delivered the dance floor. Played 2 or 3 more tracks after this, but they were all included in the last On Fire set. It turns out I am really happy about the first set I played at the last Riot Bootique. There were mixed signals from the crowd but after listening to it, I really think it came out a club blast---minus a live accident on a Bowie segment which has been removed here. DJ Angst and I played some spanking new tracks which can leave some in the crowd unmoved. But by summer time when Reinier Zonneveld, Bakermat's Games Continued, Cassian's rework of Sinnamon's Need U now, Soulwax/Erasmus and others are all Club hits, you can say you heard them at the Riot Bootique first Bloomington!
