Topando a noite inteira a velha batucada
Nas rodas de malandro minhas preferidas
Eu digo mesmo eu te amo, e nunca I love you
Enquanto houver Brasil
Na hora da comida
Eu sou do camarão ensopadinho com chuchu

New York Attitude

So now I see I was way too politically correct on my Noble Savage post. Since all of my relationships in the past 12 years have been with New Yorkers, and I have been married to one for 5, I feel a real connection to the attitude! Here's how they really feel about the South, Morals, Taxes and the last US election: Fuck the South!

German Disco

Even with my ear still under water, I started my usual search for those tracks that there's no way in hell I can get in Jesusland.... My morning gem today is Baby's on Fire by Superpitcher -- a Brian Eno original from Here come the Warm Jets.

Here's a sample of the Westbam remix.

GMT

Back on GMT! I have been offline on travel and work. My right ear popped over the big pond, and now I am dropping antibiotics... I can't get my Zen on -- no beats allowed on my ear drum for the time being... Please someone channel some grooves into my brain...

I am happy to be in Portugal. Had a fab family weekend on the banks of the Rio Zêzere... Great food, great company, slowly re-charging....

Cartograms of the US election

Fantastic work by some friends at the University of Michigan. The one below shows the Urban-Rural contrast well:

I still like the one below best ;-)

Detroit Electro Funk

The evolutionary advantage of Music

Some debate the evolutionary advantage of music. Pinker says music is a spandrel (Gould and Lewontin's idea that in evolution some highly intricate structures are nonfunctional in origin, or at least do not arise via selective pressures, but rather arise from scaffolding, hitchhiking, or self-organizing mechanisms).

In the Science piece Michael Balter says: "For social-cohesion theorists, the challenge is to explain why singing or dancing enhanced social bonding--and why that in turn fosters greater fitness and survival."

These guys need to get out more. Only lab rats would question the evolutionary value of music... Does music give you a reproductive advantage? Duh! Meet the Groupies!

Too much heaven on their minds...

Last night we went to see the current Jesus Christ Superstar Tour. I guess I am in a retro mood, but JCS (the movie) was the first album I ever bought! So I loved the show!

Apaixonado...

Amorosa

Noble Savage

Tom Wolfe's piece in the London Times pushes the utterly boring glorification of the values of rural America. As if the real America is only the heartland...It really is a variation of the myth of the Noble Savage. Why does Wolfe and the like assume that rural folk are more truthful, more in touch with reality, more honest than the urban folk -- including the liberal elite!?

As it is obvious from the graph data compiled by the NYTimes, urban areas voted Democrat and sub-urban and rural areas voted Republican. This distinction is not a bias of the liberal elite, it is plain fact. To call the majority of urban dwellers a liberal elite is at best stupid and at worse a means to denigrate the opinions of a very culturally and economically diverse group.

And again, why is Cincinnati more real, more moral than New York City?

Cincinnati is a place where people live a fiction of morality. No drinking allowed, but just cross the river to the Kentucky part of town to have your booze. Like many heartland places, it chooses the hypocrisy of fictional morality to reality. The 'moral' majority there prefers fiction to fact. That's why they believe that WMD was found in Iraq. That's why they believe in creationism. That's why they follow the Christianity of 9 commandments -- Christians for death penalty. That's why the rates of children out of marriage are much higher in rural areas than in cities. That's why drug and alcohol use is higher there too.

The problem is that their fictional way of life has real repercussions , often nasty. It was (is?) in this moral heartland, not far from Cincinnati in Indiana, that the KKK had its headquarters.

I like Urban civilization! And mostly because in cities people are used and enjoy diversity (or else they leave!). And from seeing so many different people one gets cynical about values such as morality and truth. Urbanites have a radar for hypocrisy. And that's what they don't like about places like Cincinnati!

Frank Rich tells it like it is: On 'Moral Values,' it's Blue in a Landslide
