Zapateirices

I could not agree with Olmy more! This Spanish weapon sale to Venezuela that Zapatero went to seal is an absolute disgrace. Zapatero is proving to be capable of raising to the hypocritical heights of Olaf Palme -- another darling of the euro-left.

Chavez is a little dictator with a lot of oil money, bent on pushing the self-destruction of the Venezuelan social fabric to increase his own power. Lesson number 1 of little dictators is to generate hatred from the masses towards some racial group. His target is the European-looking people of Venezuela -- a country that never had a history of racial strife.

Moreover, he is funding all sorts of movements across South America to destabilize the region -- as if it needs that... Zapatero's move is telling. By getting so cozy, he runs the risk of antagonizing many other South American ex-colonies. But I guess Repsol speaks louder... So much righteousness about Oil and Wars, but in the end, everybody is after the same thing. It's gonna end, and you gotta have it!

Blessed Exponentially

Praise be to Cosma Shalizi for digging this gem of faith-based science: I am not sure what observables define the vectors of the space where the eigenspace of Christ is calculated, but if God were an eigenvector, given the monotheistic axiom, wouldn't it have to be a spectrum of one eigenvalue?

Theomathematical insanity apart, I have to agree that the linear algebra devotionals are the best, though Zen is partial to exponential blessings. My friend Olmy will be happy to find out that these devotionals at least acknowledge that the value of Pi cannot be derived from biblical readings. In any case, Cosma did pass onto me the strong desire to read The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind.

If you check Cosma's Blog, who is back in force, make sure to also read Dept. of "What Part of 'Do Justice and Love Mercy' Do You Not Understand?"

Rockism sucks!

Obrigado Dr. Evil!

Rebel, rebel, baby!

By the way: Falando de rebel, rebel, meus amigos evil e baby, foi a onda zen quem primeiro delirou com o seu Jorge no Life Aquatic.

The God Racket, From DeMille to DeLay

"[...] Culture is often a more reliable prophecy than religion of where the country is going, and our culture has been screaming its theocratic inclinations for months now."

"At a time when government, culture, science, medicine and the rule of law are all under threat from an emboldened religious minority out to remake America according to its dogma [...] it's clear that one principle [...] has remained inviolate no matter what the courts have to say: American moguls, snake-oil salesmen and politicians looking to score riches or power will stop at little if they feel it is in their interests to exploit God to achieve those ends."

I've been digging you like an old soul record

No one exudes Soul Power these days quite like Me'Shell N'degéOcello. In the last decade or so she has been releasing amazing grooves filled with attitude and brain. Besides Prince, who else makes music this sensual? Her records are as if "what's going on" and "let's get it on" were mixed effortlessly into a whole. Listening to them, it's impossible not to want to get nasty and political at the same time -- even when you may not entirely agree with her politics.

Remember "If that's your boyfriend" (real video) and also take a look at a more recent Pocketbook (real video). I saw her live in Santa Fe, and it was amazing. Check her live performance on Jay Leno (real video), and her Jazz stint at Montreaux with the Spirit Music Sextet (real video).

Take a listen to the Jazzy Sexy Grooves of "I'm digging you like an old soul record" and "Nocturnal Sunshine", and much more.

I can only imagine what the love child of Prince and Me'Shell would be like -- A Soul Buddha? Zen doesn't get groovier than this, baby!

P.S. Unfortunately her last album (a Jazz one) has only been released in France.

Spring: Live from Chichén Itzá!

From Olmy -- thanks!!!

Watch the webcast of the spring equinox in Chichén Itzá.

At the spring equinox "the day and night are of equal length and the sun is at its sunrise midpoint along the horizon. Like many ancient cultures, the Maya in Southern Mexico kept the positions of the sun in mind while building their great buildings. A beautiful example is displayed at a site called Chichén Itzá, in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. Thousands of people gathered to witness the appearance of a shadow, in the form of a serpent, that descends the main staircase of the great pyramid.

The Live@Exploratorium crew was there to capture the snake as it appeared and to speak with local archaeologists, archeoastronomers, and solar scientists about this amazing alignment, the Mayan cosmology behind it, and what the sun means to us today."

I have been a big fan of the Mayan writing system (I loved visiting Chichen Itza!) and other ancient writing systems. Watching this was very, very cool!

the XXI century that was not supposed to be

So now even "science" museums in Jesusland refuse to screen movies where evolution, the true age of dinossaurs, or the big bang are referred. James Cameron, one of the movie directors in case, calls it a shift to "faith-based science" from empiricism. On a good day I call it the XXI century that was not supposed to be; other days I just call it ignorant bullshit.

Let us think what a real Jesusland country would be like on its own...We already know that the more Jesuslandish states in the US are the poorest, least productive states... That it is where divorce, drug-use, and alcoholism are more prevalent. What would an evangelical republic built on "faith-based science" look like? It would be fun to see the tech-no-logical society they would build from bible studies.

It is our fault, really. We scientists should lobby to have technology labeled with the theories used to produce it. I am sorry sir, but as a biblical literalist you can't use this computer -- technology developed in a heliocentric project. Nope, you can't take that medicine either -- produced with population genetics and evolutionary drug design. But you can try our faith-based medicine, it did wonders in the middle ages.

By the way: this is not an anti-religious rant. The majority of Christians, such as Catholics, renounce geocentrism, accept evolution, and the current theories of universal origins -- been there, done that.

Power in the Darkness

This year I seem to be fascinated by the late seventies... I was very young then (10-12 years old), but my brother was playing all this great punk and new wave stuff. One we really liked was the Tom Robinson Band (TRB). These were the days of "Rock Against Racism" and other such againstisms.

Interestingly, me, my brother and our friends used TRB's "fight the power" attitude against the left and far-left who ruled Portugal in those days. Punk was a great device against late-coming, bearded, May of 68 school teachers. They wanted us to listen exclusively to folk music, we wanted Punk and Disco! Yeah, that's right. Punk and Disco were both great ways to piss them off. In the Portuguese context of the time, one was a right-wing anarchist jab, and the other a hedonist flirtation with materialistic life. Since 70's marxists were very interested in re-engineering youth towards the orderly following of authentic culture -- as dictated by the intelligentsia -- anarchist hedonism was not at all what they expected from us, but that's what they got.

Anyway, I digress. It is interesting that we used TRB's leftist tunes against the leftist Portuguese establishment of the time. Context is everything. But in some sense it does justice to Tom Robinson's music and stance. He was supposed to be some kind of Gay Protest Song Leader, but was actually living with a woman with whom he had a child. He became enslaved, as it were, by the community he was "liberating".

Both left and right have a tremendous capacity to reduce individual freedom. Indeed, Power in the Darkness is again very relevant. Ultimately it is not at all about left and right, but about standing up for our freedom. I don't say rights because I don't believe that anyone is born with any kind of rights given to us from above, or from some ultimately meta-physical concept of dignity. We, as individuals and groups, construct our moral and social possessions, such as freedom. And we better believe that we have to stand up to have and to keep them.

So here is TRB's 2004 Remix of Power in the Darkness(mp3). I much prefer the original...Don't take no for an answer (quicktime video)!

Von Neumann Augustus

I started my divine heterarchy with Bowie. Continuing my "Deityship series", I present my scientific deity: John Von Neumann. He certainly inspired and empowered many.

See the Wikipedia article for all the amazing advancements Von Neumann contributed to, or the book by my colleague Bill Aspray. What most inspires me about Von Neumann is his work on Self-Reproducing Automata. I have written about this at length elsewhere, indeed!

What is perfectly amazing about his self-reproducing model is that he independently arrived at a pretty complete model of neo-Darwinian selection before the DNA molecule, and its genetic role had been discovered! He pursued a purely theoretical approach to study the observation that unlike biological organisms, which can evolve to increase in complexity in an open-ended manner, our machines always degrade in complexity. He went about thinking how to build machines that could also increase in complexity. And, just by thinking about it, he reached a stripped down model of (genetic-driven)evolution. I can't think of anyone else to whom the term genius is more applicable.

Direita internacionalista

É a batucada.

A Novidade
Gilberto Gil, João Barone e Herbert Viana

A novidade veio dar à praia
Na qualidade rara de sereia,
Metade o busto de uma deusa maia
Metade um grande rabo de baleia

A novidade era o máximo
Um paradoxo estendido na areia
Alguns a desejar seus beijos de deusa
Outros a desejar seu rabo pra ceia.

Oh! Mundo tão desigual
Tudo é tão desigual
Oh, oh, oh, oh...
Oh! De um lado esse carnaval
De outro a fome total
Oh, oh, oh, oh...

E a novidade que seria um sonho
O milagre risonho da sereia
Virava um pesadelo tão medonho
Ali naquela praia, ali na areia

A novidade era a guerra
Entre o feliz poeta e o esfomeado
Estraçalhando uma sereia bonita
Despedaçando o sonho pra cada lado

Oh! Mundo tão desigual
Tudo é tão desigual
Oh, oh, oh, oh...
Oh! De um lado esse carnaval
De outro a fome total
Oh, oh, oh, oh...

Loosen up people!

News from the post-reality World

Every day gets a little bit weirder. I used to think post-modernism was something my left-wing "Theory" friends engaged in... I was ill prepared for a post-modern, right-wing U.S. government. Just like postmodern architecture was a nice idea that lead to some dreadful copycat buildings, this new breed of conservatives may have taken its cues from literary left-wingers (as Vidal has suggested) who could not have anticipated how their ideas would evolve.

I still think of myself as a right-wing person, in some old-fashioned libertarian way. That's why I was at first puzzled to realize that I have disliked this neocon troupe from the start. Indeed I remember infuriating my conservative friends by calling neocons crooks, well before the war.

Now I finally realize that I am just so helplessly XX century! My fact-based lifestyle is apparently in danger of becoming a relic of enlightenment in a World-past. Reality is now circumscribed to a stubborn community -- presumably to be eventually eliminated or absorbed, like pagans in an early-Christian Rome? Fact-based reality is to be retired, and an enactment-based reality is to be established. This is not a loony-left, Orwell-inspired rant, it's the stated neocon plan:

Ron Suskind reported an October 2004 interview with an administration's aide who "said that guys like me were 'in what we call the reality-based community,' which he defined as people who 'believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.' I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. 'That's not the way the world really works anymore,' he continued. 'We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality -- judiciously, as you will -- we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.'"

And so, as Eric Boehlert writes in Salon.com, the goal apparently is "to undermine the press itself -- and thereby eliminate inconvenient truths?"

I suppose I should be scared about this, but I am not. It simply won't work. Reality has a way of catching up to you. As Aldous Huxley said, "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored." Christian Rome was no more able to erase pagan habits than Marxist governments were successful at re-engineering human beings... More often than not, tragedy results from ignoring reality. Calling his ranch Neverland and molding his own body didn't turn Michael Jackson into Peter Pan -- though it may have messed with many people's lives.

The neocons may be quite successful at eliminating the transmission of facts via the press, but what all postmodern thinkers fail to realize is that reality doesn't bite via the word, it bites when physical barriers are reached. No amount of acting accomplishes real missions -- and there may be just too many of those in the cards.

When I recall the famous mission accomplished boat show, somehow I always think of Karl Rove, behind the scenes, singing Leonard Cohen's "First we Take Manhattan". But I suspect he and his buddies will end up having a lot of people knocking on their dressing rooms singing Queen's "another one bites the dust" instead. Let's just hope theirs is not our collective tragedy.
