D.I.S.C.O. or Dance Interpretations of Skeptical Cultural Objects.
Trying to think of my favorite postmodern music, I came up with this list. Who better than Umberto Eco to describe it: 'I think of the postmodern attitude as that of a man who loves a very cultivated woman and knows he cannot say to her, "I love you madly", because he knows that she knows (and that she knows that he knows) that these words have already been written by Barbara Cartland. Still there is a solution. He can say, "As Barbara Cartland would put it, I love you madly."'
Someday with more time I will make a proper Mix out of it.... Authenticity in art is overrated.

This City's local Disco DJ has kept my Zen again.
We finally submitted a paper that was in the works for, seriously, at least 6 years.
This music on rotation in my player helped maintain the necessary Zen. This City's local Disco DJ has kept my Zen again. Good thing I am also that DJ once in a while: Hey City Zen!

Prolonged Gratification Award: 10,000 Anos Depois Entre Vénus e Marte
Have not posted one of these in a while. I have not tired of this 1970's progressive rock album by
José Cid, pretty much all my life---since my brother introduced me to it in 1978. The album is considered among the
top five progressive rock albums of 1978 worldwide, and considered Essential:
a masterpiece of progressive rock music by specialists in the genre. I have never been a fan of progressive rock, especially since in 1978 Punk and Disco were much more exciting, but this record is a dream for anyone into vintage keyboards and synths and I never tire of it. You can hear
the whole thing on youtube, shown below.

The last half hour
I have been enjoying a great deal the
Riot Bootique DJ night we put together every month, but I have to say that the last half hour before the club closes can be weird as hell. The video below cracked me up because there is some truth to it, though I mostly get crazy ladies screaming for their song.

Bowie ain't St. Sebastian
Bowie's new video above is supposedly causing a bit of a commotion for its depiction of Catholic imagery to emphasize the Church's hypocrisy, especially vis a vis the sexual scandals. Bowie is an amazing artist---
my favorite artist---but, honestly, this video is not innovative at all. It is quite manipulative because it will make people (many of his fans, judging by the Facebook and Twitter comments) feel like they are edgy for playing with the "meanie" catholic church, when in truth it is all false edginess. It is so safe---and so cliche---to play with Catholics, that this feels like a super-studied MTV video awards show: studied
faux edginess. Safe because no one is going to order a fatwa on your head, and cliche because it was already cliche when Madonna did it (with stigmata and all)... Sadly, the
Stars (are out tonight) video was also a rip-off from The
Eurythmics Savage video album... The
Where are we now video was much more interesting.
Don't get me wrong, I can see an artist (a painter at that) like Bowie being inspired by Catholic imagery, but the video is manipulative by seemingly trying to pinpoint the hypocrisy of the Church, while simultaneously being hypocritical itself by following, in addition to the safe/cliche
faux edginess, the easy angle of linking sexuality to the catholic emphasis on the body and flesh. Honestly, if you can't top
Mishima, don't do this...

Play Rave Riot
The latest E-Trash sets, from
Riot Bootique, on the night of April 26 at
Root Cellar Lounge. Here are both sets I played. The first set is a playful, disco-club party. The second set, which was done without any preparation, is a rave that goes from techno-hip hop to acid to disco. Hey, we had the glow sticks out... Tracklists below. Miami Dive
The latest E-Trash mix, from
Riot Bootique, on the night of March 22 at
Root Cellar Lounge. This is mostly the starter set (re-recorded after the event due to glitches at the event) plus a portion of the second set (played live). This is one of the most melodic mixes I have made, and I really like the result: sexy horizontal disco all the way to the party. BTW, since this was a starter set, it is always curious to me at which track people actually start dancing seriously; in this case it was between tracks 9 and 10---disco and and actual verbal command ("you can dance if you want to") seems to do the trick every time... The latest E-Trash mix, from Riot Bootique, last Saturday at the Farm Root Cellar. I forgot to record it live, but here I re-recorded a combination of the two sets I played minus a few tracks. Echo Beach: On my radio 75-85
As I get near my travel date back to the US, after a long sabbatical in Lisbon, I am enjoying greatly the things I miss most when on the other side: the Ocean and Family. Having my old vinyl collection for this time and listening to it near the Ocean, made me of course go down memory lane. Interesting that some of the things that echo back to mind from the past are not necessarily the things I did most when younger. These echos are what I had in mind when I prepared this
long mix. These are sounds that echoed this year back to my mind from the years between 75 and 85. The point was not at all to catalog those years, as I ended up not including artists and tracks that meant a lot to me back then and still do (Miles Davis, Eurythmics, Prince, etc, etc.) But these echoed back, and here they are. I am going to miss this life.
Track Listing:
01 - The Selecter - On My Radio
02 - New Adventures - Come on
03 - The Sparks - This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us
04 - Rod Stewart - Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?
05 - Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue
06 - David Bowie - Fascination

09 - Amanda Lear - Fashion Pack
10 - Santa Esmeralda - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
11 - The Dukes (Bugatty & Musker) - Thank you for the party
12 - Giorgio Moroder - Utopia
13 - Space - Just Blue
14 - Patrick Cowley - Tech No Logical World
15 - Freeez - I.O.U
16 - Heaven 17 - Let Me Go
17 - The Human League - Love Action (I Believe In Love)
18 - Yazoo - Sweet Thing
19 - The Tubes - Turn Me On

Gira-discos: prolonged gratification award
Nunca me canso de o ouvir, e daí o
prolonged gratification award.

Still trancing after all these years
So
BT's new album is not a complete stream of great tracks, like his
earlier stuff used to be. But there are some awesome tracks on the latest "
These Hopeful Machines" (
listen to album on myspace). My current favorite to go for my usual jog along the Atlantic ocean from Carcavelos to Oeiras is "
Le Notcturne de Lumiere (youtube link)". I mean, if in the middle of this track you don't have the urge to jump on the biggest loudspeaker you can find, waving your arms to Gaia armed with glow sticks and all, there is something wrong with you. Another great track below.

Riding on the dynamics of the system
'One of Eno's favorite quotes, from the managerial-cybernetics theorist Stafford Beer, would become a fundamental guiding principle for his work: ''Instead of trying to specify it in full detail," Beer wrote in his book The Brain of the Firm, "you specify it only somewhat. You then ride on the dynamics of the system in the direction you want to go."' Full article "
Brian Eno, Peter Schmidt, and Cybernetics" @ Rhizone
Brian Eno definitely deserves the "oblique strategy" prolonged gratification award. His hands have been breaking the frame of so many musicians and artists in the last decades, and in so doing generating amazing (cybernetic) art.
Thank you Artemy for the link.

Late night soundtrack (Updated May 24, 2009)
Another late night working, a few new tracks. The mood is to be filed somewhere, somehow, under the theme of
Love likes Disco, Glitches and all.
Tiga and
Peaches on high rotation.
Much to write here, but very little time with the impending move to Lisbon for the whole year! Will try again later.
